The Holidays!

December 2, 2007 by the creatures

Believe it or not, the Holidays are upon us. Chilly weather has struck (even in California), houses have been adorned in blinking lights, and an endless array of Kay Jewelers ads have hit the air. It’s always a crazy time of year as the country bustles from here to there manically preparing for trips home to see family and friends – all while patiently waiting for Santa.

We’ve thought a lot about what to give our families. After tossing “vacation home in New Hampshire” and a “trip around the world with Jay – Z” we figured the best gift we could muster was simply spending more time with them. We’ve had an absolute blast over the last 7 months building this little box and we have some fun plans for the future. But in order to do this right, we’ve decided to take a small break from the site for the month of December. It’s our small way of saying thanks to our loving wives and children who have watched us toil away at the Cintiq for quite awhile.

But make no mistake, come January 1st we’ll be back in full force with new posts and features. Make sure you don’t have too much of a hangover because we’ll want to see you bright and early. As a preview of what’s to come, we’ve placed a couple videos below giving a peek at our process – it is the season of giving!

We sincerely would like to thank all of you who have come to view our ramblings. As always, we truly look forward to the future. Keep it safe everyone. We’ll see you soon.

  6. Guys, always great to see what you come up with next, so fluid and natural looking – looks effortless.
Enjoy family time and don’t let the pets pee on the xmas tree. :)

There is nothing more special than time with family. I have never posted here before, but I wanted to say that you guys are truly inspirational. Your designs and sketches are so full of life and action. I can’t say enough.

Those videos are just awesome as well. So is that sketchbook program better than say PS or Corel for drawing in? I just love how sharp your lines are and in PS I never seem to be able to make them smooth like that. I think I will have to demo that program.

  8. dave says:

Thanks guys. Welcome aboard Mike. Nothing beats Sketchbook for drawing and inking – very fluid and feels really natural to work in.

  9. Owen says:

Awesome stuff guys, me n some fellow concept artists always make sure we have a look at your website from time to time. Those videos are ace!

  10. Alfred says:

Greg, say Hi to to the wife and kids, hope your holidays are great!!

  12. Pops says:

Great job to both of you. Just don’t ask Dave to cut your grass; he tends to cut it a tad short sometimes. Maybe he can do a sketch someday to show you the look on his face that time. Love ya Dave, Pops

Hey guys…I’ve been a looker for a long time trying to get my nerve up to come back to illustrating fulltime since the computer invaded earth!

Your site has been moved all the way up to my personal favorite and those videos are awesome. If I hang around here too ling I might actually learn something.

    Great Blog!

Merry Christmas and see you on the first,
    Bernard

  18. flaviano says:

wow guys, this is more than a tutorial! great work, it’s almost impossible to believe that it’s done all in Sketchbook. what resolution is? do you use tablet or screen?

    have a nice day!

  19. greg says:

Thanks guys! Bernard, computers are just tools. Photography did the same thing to artists back in its early days. So please, get back to it!

Flav-the vids were only done at a bit under 1000 pixels wide then reduced. Dave and I both use Cintiq21UX tablet monitors. They’re pricey, but they have more than made up for their cost in efficiency. Wacom just released some new ones that are easier on the pocket.

If we don’t talk before it, Happy Holidays again everyone! Don’t get too caught up in the commercialism.

    Best-
    g-

    Hey Guys,

Really cool tutorial! Thanks for posting these. I always wondered how you two work so fast. Wow. I actually played the demos side by side to se who’ll finish first. :P Very inspiring!

  24. joverine says:

amazingly amazing!!! please please tell me how you made that video? what program to draw in and which to record it with? and how did u get the super sweet border?!
I’m sure these are tightly kept secrets-but if not I would love to know!
