Got me some Tablet PC!!! Oh toys. Expensive frickin’ toys, but it is so cool. And now I can get my work done outside the studio in the company of my beautiful wife. And on the GO!!! Which the future is boding quite a lot of it seems.

And to that end, CreatureBox is taking a month off from posting. Not from being CreatureBox, but we need some time to wrap up a couple of big projects and finish our ComicCon deadlines. It’s all very hush hush, but as always, we have been toiling away behind the scenes and can’t wait to share. Stay tuned!!! And we’ll see you in a month!

But to keep everyone busy, we are handing out a homework assignment. 300 words on what you did on your summer vacation! Nah…we want to expand the site a bit in the coming months. One part will be an FAQ. We get a lot of technique questions, professional questions, absurd questions, and a few questions we actually know the answers to. So ask away in this post. We’ll compile a list and do our best to answer what we can without giving away all our secrets.

And GO!!!! Now off to work. Peace.

    Question 1:
Who are your favorite artists to look to for inspiration?

A month!!! What? That’s two long! I need the weekly post from you guys!! Questions huh? I believe I have more request than Q’s. 1. Video tutorial with voice over on your new sketchbook. 2. I always love the finish product on your post but I would really appreciate more post with the actual rough drawing. Shapes and line movement really catch my eye! 3. Photoshop tips? 4.Coloring tips 5. Skpro brush settings? I’m curious on the brush setting for you thin lines as well as your thicker darker lines. I think I’ve said enough for now… Can’t wait to see what you guys got up your sleeve! -Jm

Hey guys, Great Work!! I just picked up a copy of SketchbookPro 2010 and it rocks hard!! Always wondered… What program do you use to record your onscreen drawing for the videos you post here and put on the dvd with the book? I would love to get my hands on that for MAC!!

  5. Hey guys,

    Great website, great art!

I would like to know how the tabletPC compares to a Cintiq?

One of my main challenges is to get a nice smooth line drawn in SketchBook using my Wacom pen/tablet (cintiq is a bit expensive for me…). The curve&line tools in SB are a great alternative but I think when you are drawing on a Cintiq or maybe a Tablet PC the issue does not exist, or does it?

Anyway, keep up the good work!

OOOoo… You know every time I open my internet software I use to go on your website and enjoy. One month seems reeeeaaallly long but it is short to^^
Niel I think I am in the same case a yours because I work on a wacom bamboo fun and it is VERY hard to get nice inking!Sometimes I want to throw my tablet by the window because I can’t get the right line I have with a pen.
So same question, is that me or the tablet who’s working bad? lol
    See you
(sorry again for my french english style^^)

Those are some interesting designs. My favorite is the one in the top right corner with the sunken in eyes. I hope I’m able to get a copy of Sketchbook Pro 2010 soon so I can create my own creatures. :) Can’t wait to see what you guys have to show after your month long break.

Sweet stuff you guys are the bomb. I got the book and really like it, but I was wondering how you work in the coloring process. Just kind of a basic outline would be sweet.

The other questions I have are more about what its like to work how you do, as in professionally. Are you always busy? Is there big lulls in between projects? Are you freelance or part of a company that transfers you from project to project? Just wondering what the life of a concept designer is like?

Is that enough questions? Ill post more if I can think of them.

    See you in a month.

Sick man! Tablet PC’s are so convenient and they are getting better and better every year. I love mine and rarely leave home without it. So… no real questions here. Good luck with ComicCon!

  10. irwin says:

Oh just…when you do videos about your work (king skully etc..) on your dvd or on the site, could you just show us your photoshop layers? But asking that is maybe too much… we’ll understand if you don’t want to deliver your secrets^^
I think it may answer many questions of your fans to show how you work whith highlight layers etc etc…
And juste last question…when you exports your inking to photoshop from SBP, in wich format do you do it?

  11. The Wrist says:

A holiday! Gee..what are those…Hey this is stunning! I use ASBP for storyboarding on my 21cm tablet yeah I love it!

How do u get such perfect circles curves etc-damn beautiful lines work! By turning your Portable PC tablet? Thanks! Inspiring stuff!

  12. VoR says:

Which tablet PC did you get?

Hello dudes, You guys mention sometimes the stress that comes with your job title. Lets talk about that with some detail, you always hear about the good stuff and success that happens, i mean yeah who wants to talk about the bad right? But its interesting. what makes it bad for you guys sometimes. what are some if any of the negatives of working as a character designer/concept artist/art director. what are you new job titles since the move?

  14. Michael Roy says:

    Hi Guy’s,

I was wondering if you do all your line work in SBP, and if so, do you use the pencil tool for your roughs? What tool do you use for your clean up line, and what are the settings for that tool ( I think it’s the brush tool with some modifications?) Also, just a bit of general description of what you are thinking about when you are approaching clean up, do you draw the lines fast or slow, are you thinking more about line weight, or gesture…..You know stuff like that.

Also, maybe a bit of insight as to how long it takes for each stage of the process, and what steps you think are the most important to achieve a great concept sketch, when working with tight deadlines.

Thanks so much for all the inspiration !!!

I came back with couple more interesting questions, maybe you can give some helpful info here for those of us really wondering. ( so that when we feel ready )

    1) what are some of the things one should include in a portfolio when submitting theirs for a position as character designer to video game company’s big or small, (if that matters)

    2) what are some of the steps one should take when submitting a portfolio for a position as character designer, are character designers freelance or does the company usually place you under payroll? should one create a contract?

    3) is it difficult to break into the industry? what are some tips you guys can give us aspiring artists to start out.

    Thank you.
    Oscar
