The Great Outdoors

Moleskin 03
I was laid up this past week. As my symptoms subsided, I was greeted by a warm sunny weekend. Taking the opportunity to bask in the rays of the welcome spring-like sun, I watched from a lawn chair as my 3 year old boy tromped through the woods as if he were discovering treasures every 2 feet, and hit everything else with a stick. So I had some time to draw, and I wasn’t willing to give up my basking to hit the PC. So I made a piece in my moleskin. Finished it up at the kitchen table. I don’t know if I’m completely thrilled with it. The forms don’t separate all that well from each other, but it was nice to draw with ink. I’ll figure it out.

Also, the votes for the Thorndyke Photo Contest seem to be winding down. So Tuesday and announce the winner on Wednesday! Get those last minute votes in soon!

I love how everything looks somewhat peaceful in this pic. Very nice. :) There’s nothing better than relaxing in the sun while drawing.

Also, I just got my Moleskine so I’ll be drawing in it soon. The craftsmanship of these Moleskines is incredible, too! Although, I wonder if you can tell me what’s the best thing to use to draw with without having it smudge or smear on to the next page? I’d hate to have any drawings messed up.

Hey Phillip! The moleskin is great because somehow they made the paper really durable, but some inks still go through. I suggest roller ball ball-point pens, microns, and the brush-pen we are using is a Pentel. Smudging isn’t a real issue, it’s more the bleed. Cheap Bic pens work surprisingly well.

Awesome composition work here man. I love how far his tail goes back into the woods. Be really cool if you could see some hinted mountains or just silhouetted line masses in the background to really add more to the depth of the piece. That may be a bit much though making it too busy back there with all the vertical forms happening from the trees.

Sweet drawing. I love the trees for some reason.

Moleskine sketchbooks rock. I use Copic SP fineliners and the Pentel ben in my moleskine with no bleed through. Any alcohol based marker will bleed right through a page. Copic makes the SPs in brush tips and in .3 tips in assorted colors. If you just want blacks, you can get the SPs in various sizes. They’re refillable and the tips are replaceable. I like them much better than microns.

Sorry for the sales pitch…I’m in no way affiliated with Copic. :)

Awesome! I love the use of black for the shading, instead of just lines (like I would have done haha) How do you draw so amazingly neat with those brush pens?? I decided to pick one up to give it a try, it’s REALLY hard to get that tiny little tip where you want it!

Line weights ALL wrong. Made me dizzy looking at that and tring to figure out what iss shape was.

WoW you are a master in inking. That looks amazing. It has something warm to it, which is probably the result of your smooth line work. I loved your sketchbook drawings but this is incredible. There is just a lot to learn from your drawings… Thanks for sharing!
