Space Camp: Day 2,145
After nearly 6 years of residency, students within the masters program must complete one of the toughest hand-to-hand challenges for their final exams: the Methane Pools of Glaxon 6. With no weaponry or planetary guidance systems, each student must navigate miles of thriving, treacherous pools. For the successful trainee, just past the finish line awaits the Elite Program – complete with laser pistols. Who doesn’t like a good laser pistol?!?

Also wanted to throw out a huge thank you for all the kind words and support with the sketchbooks. We know these are crazy economic times and we can’t say enough how much we appreciate the support. For those still awaiting your copies, they should be at your door real soon!

Space Camp: Day 4,538Space Camp: Day 4,538 Workflow
I figure Space Camp isn’t just for kids. After several years, maybe even decades, students are finally given the opportunity to chart new territory in the name of the school. The galaxy is a pretty big place so I would imagine there’s plenty to uncover and all sorts of ground to stick flags into.

*Update*
Thanks for all the really kind words everyone. I added a little process jpeg to show our general workflow of rough to line to color.

Party onward!

Space Camp: Day 27
Life is good. The tidal wave of boxes has finally subsided as my wife and I get settled in our new place. Even the studio has started to take shape – this is the first time we’ve shared a studio space since college. (Though I think she would have preferred her own room when I was rockin’ to Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet.)

As far as the image, I’m finding I really enjoy having bad things sneak up on characters. Not sure why but I’m guessing there’s some deep rooted Freudian complex at play.

Space Camp: Day 15
Drawing is tough. Not kinda tough, or partially tough, or fleetingly tough – more like you want to pull your hair out while running into oncoming traffic tough. Tonight was a rough one which involved painting the above image twice from scratch. Fortunately my lovely wife and cats were here to keep me company, no matter how much I was swearing. I plan on locking away the first version in a tiny aluminum box to be buried deeply in the back yard.

So if you found yourself at your drawing board this evening slapping yourself around or questioning if you would ever draw anything palatable ever again, a kid in North Carolina was sitting right along with you.

Battle onward everyone!

Landed
Hey everybody,

After four and a half days of driving, we arrived safely in North Carolina. The trip was surprisingly relaxing even as we carted the cats through 4 different hotels. Aside from some torrential downpours in Texas and a car fire in Tennessee, the drive was pretty tame. My gracious in-laws have taken us in until we can find a home and even allowed me to set up a make shift studio. I’m looking forward to drawing more during my time off. Here’s to new adventures!
