King Skullie!

May 29, 2008 by dave

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of working on a fun project with the great students of “Ralphadelphia!” in Florida. They wrote and designed King Skullie – a true defender of evil. For my contribution I promised a video drawing which has now slithered its way onto CreatureBox!

Greg and I are still working on our Comic-Con plans. More on that soon along with the announcement of our Birthday contest winner!

    Awesome stuff

Just wondered whether everything was drawn freehand using just a brush. The linework is perfect!

    Cheers

Fantastic video, I really love the unique shapes that you start with and then flesh out. Just a quick question, which tool are you using for the sketching and inking in Sketchbook Pro, are they custom tools or one of the default pencils or pens? Keep on drawing, cheers Rob.

  20. dave says:

Thanks Rob. The brushes are custom based on the pencil tool. You can get the majority of the variation from experimenting with the spacing and edge hardness settings. Wider spacing is more pencil like while tight spacing creates a sable brush feel. Hope that helps!

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the tips about how to edit the tools in Sketchbook Pro. I’m going to try them out when I get home from work. Cheers, Rob.

  22. Rob B says:

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for those tips, I just succeded in making some pretty good clones of my favourite HB sketching pencil and an old sable inking brush, in addition I even made an ellipse brush. Oh, and I picked up a copy of your CreatureBox sketchbook with the enclosed DVD as well, great stuff on there.
Just a question though, what is the standard image size that you use for the video illustrations on the DVD? I ask because the default Sketchbook Pro Image size of 2.8 by 1.68 inches with a resolution of 600 seems odd to me, and when I dial it up to mimic a page of 8×11 paper the tools go all wonky. Keep up the excellent work, cheers, Rob.

  23. Hi! You have amazing skills! I’m sure everyone keep telling you that. But two things about your work bothering me actually. The first one: when you cleanup colors all the colors that lays behind the line you erasing with an eraser or cover with different color? White for example.

The second thing is that I can’t get how you make so precise lines without zooming and what instrument you use? Since you don’t use any color fills I figure you don’t need to keep it 100% strong but still I’m curious :-)

    Thanks in advance
