Buggin' Out!
This piece was something I’ve been wanting to try out. The idea is personal. I worked on my Jeep all weekend…it’s something I’ve had for years. I got it at the same time as I got my dog who passed on last spring. Lately I’ve had the most vivid dreams of him. After tearing my knuckles apart under the hood of my beater all weekend, my dreams were filled with nostalgic rides with my boy through the old trails in Southern CA we used to bump around on. He was a great sport!

The other side of this piece was to try to integrate my 3D models with an illustration. I’ve been modeling in 3D apps for over a dozen years now. So I took a piece I did a while ago of one of my Story Tellers and tried to work the two disciplines together. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. I think we all understand the crutch and integrity issues involved, but I’d love to hear what you all think about it…

I really like it, I can understand why you might hesitate if you feel that using a 3d model somehow makes it easier, but I think you integrated it perfectly. It doesn’t feel like a gimmick and instead the relationship between the characters and vehicle feels solid and grounded.

    Just WOW! Greate work!

I think in a time crunch there is nothing wrong with using 3d models. But I gotta ask, did you actually use the model in the drawing or did you just look at it for reference? Because usually when people use 3 models and then draw stuff on top it looks jarring…but this drawing is seamless!

what 3d program do you use?

I think you nailed it. It’s a great 3-d model and it fits well with your characters. My only crit would be to use the model as a guide drawing over it, adding a little more weight and character to it. 3-d models can start to look rigid and unforgiving when paired with drawings. But you pulled this off nicely.

Pure genius. I love it. Your work is so polished i would never have picked the use of 3d at all (still can’t).
Not a huge fan of the dog looking off into the distance while the driver looks towards the camera. Makes them feel disconnected in the scene. Would have been nice if they where both sharing the same view/experience.

    Love your werk.

      hey paul-
I agree about the connection with the dog. I did that pose because when my dog got in a car, he acted ready to go even when it wasn’t moving, so I thought it’d be funny here. But it’s a subtle thing to try to get across.

Thanks so much for all the feedback. I used maya and a series of custom shaders setups I’ve been working with of as well as some PS tricks. Then I drew over everything that felt too stiff to breath some life back in. I agree with Jake about letting it act as a guide more. I’ll be trying more tests in the future I’m sure…but now I have to go find a piece of paper and a pencil to appease the gods! HA!

That is solid work. I didn’t realize you had any 3d in there till i read the description. Sorry about your dog passing, keep up the great though, you’re an inspiration
